What Are Storytelling Games?

Making Learning Fun

A story game (also called a storytelling game) is a game in which players tell stories—or parts of stories. Each player may tell a complete story, a section of a story, a sentence, or a single word—or a player may just create a movement or sound that could be used in storytelling.

Story games are played by individuals and by teams. Some games include movements, pencil and paper, or props—but most require nothing but a few minutes of your time.

Some storytelling games involve guessing and problem-solving, hints and deceptions, puns and proverbs, slyness and sharing.

In some games, players tell stories of personal experiences; in others, they re-work traditional stories, literary stories, news articles, etc.; in still others, they are helped to draw on their imagination for original stories.

As a result, story games are ideal vehicles for teaching, practicing, or re-inforcing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts (ELA) as well as other subject areas.

Storytelling Games for all ages

Developed by Doug Lipman, Storytelling Coach

Doug Lipman (pictured above in the 1970s) began as a movement & music specialist for young children.

While researching folksongs for use with children, he discovered some traditional storytelling games from the U.S. and abroad. This whet his appetite for more!

In 1994, Doug Wrote the pioneering book, Storytelling Games, pictured, right.

but selected games will appear in this newsletter.)
